Napoli, Resta Cu’ Mme: Designing an album for the love of Neapolitan music.

We explore the passion, life and colour of Neapolitan music to design the fourth studio album by Italian jazz singer songwriter, Carlotta Centanni.

“Napoli, Resta Cu’ Mme” is an album about love. Not only is it Carlotta’s take on some of Italy’s most beloved Neapolitan songs, they have a special place in her heart as they were sung to her when she was little by her Grandfather Armandino Zingone. Armandino was a celebrated Neapolitan singer, songwriter who performed with the world famous Renato Carosone in the 1950s and ’60s during what is often regarded as the ‘golden age’ of Italian music and culture. “Napoli, Resta Cu’ Mme” represents Carlotta’s love of Naples and a return to her Neapolitan heritage and why she first became a singer.

As a designer, we tend to call these kinds of projects “love jobs” because you have creative latitude and they’re nice to work on (and there is little budget!). But for me, this literally was a love job given I am married to Carlotta!

Neapolitan life, romance and drama

Neapolitan music is full of life, romance and drama. It is a reflection of the people of Naples who, even by Italian standards, are a deeply passionate, highly animated and expressive group.

The title of the album is derived from the famous 1957 song “Resta Cu’ Mme” by Domenico Modugno and Dino Verde, which in a Neapolitan dialect means “Stay With Me”. I wanted to convey how Napoli has always stayed with Carlotta, even when she is travelling far from her native Italy and living in her adopted home of Australia.

In 2023 I had taken hundred of black and white photos from one of Carlotta’s concerts. By overlapping and colourising the images (in a pseudo-double exposure technique) I was able to visualise ‘slices in time’ and Carlotta’s animated style when performing live. The technique is a modern take on vintage Italian movie posters and echo the jazz album designs of the 1960s.
